As Han became suddenly emerged in political affairs that he seemed hesitant to talk about, Maggie was extremely grateful for an extended visit from her sister. She had been keeping herself preoccupied with plans for Erich’s wedding, but as her pregnancy progressed, she found it difficult to be involved and had to leave those details up to her mother and Kathe.

Having Sonia around was a delight, and they spent their days visiting and watching their children play. But Maggie lost all enjoyment when Sonia brought up an unexpected topic.

“You know, Mags,” she began cautiously, “I’ve contemplated on whether or not to tell you this, but I feel you’ve got to know.”

“What is it?” Maggie asked, hating her sudden uneasiness.

“I’ve heard the servants talking,” she said, and Maggie didn’t like this already. She knew this would be something she didn’t want to hear. “You might as well have it straight out,” Sonia hedged. “Whether it’s true or not, it affects the way people see you.”

“Get on with it,” Maggie insisted.

“They say that Han is . . . well, that he’s involved . . . with a barmaid.”

“How ridiculous!” Maggie laughed tensely.

“I can’t imagine that it would be true,” Sonia said. “Still, you should be aware that . . .”

“Han would never do such a thing,” Maggie insisted. “He loves me. I’ve no doubt of it.”

“Then there’s nothing to be concerned about,” Sonia said easily. Maggie knew she was right, but she hated the nagging questions that remained at the back of her mind long after Sonia had returned to her home country of Schmautzberg. Maggie nearly brought it up with Han several times but decided against it. Memories came back of her mistrust of him when they’d been staying in Italy, and the struggles it had caused. She didn’t want to repeat such a difficult episode. She had no reason to believe Han would be deceptive. But still, the uncertainty haunted her.

Why was Han gone so much in the evenings? Never in their married life had he spent so much time away from the castle. Erich was always with Kathe. Their fathers were often busy in the office as usual. But where was Han? He had told her it was a political matter that her father had put him in charge of, but he thought it was best she not know the details. She had trusted him. Why shouldn’t she? He had never done anything to betray her trust—as far as she knew.

Thinking deeper on that time in Italy when the comtesse had attempted to entice Han into an involvement, Maggie felt a degree of comfort. Han had told Maggie then that he loved her and she was all he needed, and he had proven that over the years. Still, it needled her. Han seemed to love her as he always had, but when Maggie looked at herself in the mirror and saw only a woman well consumed with pregnancy, her panic deepened. Han was a handsome man—and he’d only become more so with time.
